It's one thing to introduce yourself to a group-- you make a few statements, we ask a few questions-- but putting the essence of who you are into a compelling statement… well that's another thing entirely. Using this link to following page as a guide, draft a compelling statement that sums up who you are in a way that makes us want to know more about you. This will be your online profile or "about me" for the class.
Remember, you're not selling a product, you're selling you. Think about what your "brand" is and how you can communicate it. Is it serious and business-like, intellectual, artistic, or perhaps fun and witty?
On the liked page, you may find the links to Seth Godin's page and Matt Cheuvront's page more helpful examples than the rest, as they are selling their writing and personal services respectively. You may choose to write in the first person point of view (I am…) or the third person point of view (He, She, They are…).
Your post should be a minimum of three substantial paragraphs.
Class, I enjoyed learning more about you and look forward to reading your posts. Don't forget you must finish posting before your next class on Tuesday.

Caitlyn is a lover of bad reality television, all types of music, and coffee. She dreams of working with children one day and is thrilled to be starting school after taking a break for so many years(almost seven, but who’s counting). She’s an only child and loves spending time with her extended family, all of whom she is very close with. She loves the summer because she lives so close to the beach, but hates how crowded it gets.
ReplyDeleteCaitlyn has lived in New Jersey most of her life, save for a year and a half when she moved to Nashville, TN. She spent her time working there as an Assistant Manager of a clothing store. She loved the city and the experience, but hated being landlocked and ultimately decided to return to the East coast this past June. She now is back living at home with her mom, two cats, and one crazy dog.
She saw her first musical on Broadway at age 5 and has been hooked ever since. She’s seen over 15 musicals since then. When she’s not busy looking for the perfect cup of coffee, she enjoys reading, binge-watching shows on Netflix, and attending as many concerts as she can afford.

DeleteHi, Caitlyn. I love your fun, spirited post which use even the unimportant details to provide a framework for your personality. Your variety of experiences and interests are intriguing. I agree with you feelings about the beach-- too many cars, too many people. Can we assume you are a county music fan, or is that a silly question!?
DeleteHi, my name is Natasha and i would like to say "how are you all!?". I'm a rather spontaneous person when i want to be, and I like to be very honest, at times too honest. Since i am the only child of he family I like to get to know people, so I like to socialize and observe and just know the things that go on around me. Due to my inquisitive nature discover new subjects and interests and this leads me o the long list of hobbies i have acquired. This lets me have this wide range of associates, now I have to le it be known, i tend to get bored easily and zone out of focus, which can alarm people. It's because of how fast i can move onto the next subject, which might make me seem a bit random and eccentric.
ReplyDeleteI have lived in Jersey City all of my life, but I'd like o say I've been well traveled. Over the summers i go to Virginia, Mississippi, or Maryland to see family and friends. My family is involved with work for educational systems, doctors, lawyers, and so on. So I've learned in these fields to always put others before yourself. I have strong family values, like southern hospitality; always make he other person feel comfortable as possible and to be kind as possible. If you ask anyone that knows me personally I love to be generous to those I love dearly.
As of now I am attending college to study Music, I can play the violin relatively well for the on and off stages of my lessons over the years, and I played alto Saxophone for one year in high school. Which was a enlightening experience. But not only do i love music. I really love fashion design and with that comes drawing and painting, which I'm really happy I'm good at because it helps a lot when trying to get your piece to be conveyed precisely how you want it. I have a love for the Arts in general and if I could be in any one of the Arts sub-subjects and use that as my basis for a future career I will be a very happy girl indeed.
Excellent-- we got a good glimpse of your personality during class discussion, and this builds on what we found out about you yesterday. When you are writing descriptions, giving examples and "showing" details can be a powerful way to convey ideas to your reader. Look for examples from your own life where you can let your reader know how "random" you can be-- or how hospitable.
DeleteHello, my name is Terrence and I am 18 years old. I currently live in Roselle,NJ and I commute by way of train each day. I'd like to consider myself a rather outgoing person even though I may seem quiet or shy trust me I am very easy to talk to. In high school, I was voted by my peers as "class clown" so I guess that would make me funny. I personally think that a sense of humor is the most appealing thing about people. As far as my personal life, I am the oldest of two children, I am Haitian-American and very athletic; in high school I played football, basketball and baseball. Even though I played sports, I decided to become a full time student and focus more on having a career.
ReplyDeleteI am a Media Arts major and I would to like to one day become a broadcast journalist for a major TV network.
Unlike many NJCU students, I was admitted by instant decision back in November. NJCU was actually my first choice and I am glad that I stuck with it because it's the perfect environment for me. I plan on making many connections during my time here. Being that we are near NYC , I also plan on getting an internship at a TV and/or Radio station and making the most out of that experience.
I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you this semester and hopefully some of us become friends and acquaintances outside of English 101. To be honest, I don't like going home after class, I'd rather stay for a while and hang out on campus or in the city whichever is more fun. So, like I said feel free to talk to me , I don't bite I promise.
Hello, Terrence. Thanks for the insight-- I don't think I would have guessed that you are know for clowning around. Spending time on campus is a good way to network at the university, and a great internship is a fantastic opportunity to get into your field. Sounds like you have your plan together!

ReplyDeleteMy name is Bryan and I am 19, language arts is my favorite subject but i do not plan on majoring in it. NJCU was my second of 5 choice universities i was looking into but i like this choice and the school. I also plan on living on campus second semester. I am an athlete and i can be competition in any sport to anyone but baseball, I do not know why but i can not catch a ball with one hand for my life...don't judge me.
ReplyDeleteIn high school i was on the wrestling team and the track and field team. I plan on joining NJCU's men's volley ball team next year because i always had a passion for volley ball but my high school did not have a men's volley ball team. So i played any where i could anytime i could when i had free time. I am also an amateur artist but mainly in ceramics. I had the highest grades in my honors ceramics classes and had a couple of my pieces in my school news papers.
It may not seem like it now but i am usually the heart beat of any English class i am in. Not a class clown more like a know it all. If i ever get out of hand and answer all the questions and do not give the other class mates a chance to answer anything feel free to tell me to shut up or just ignore me i'm use to it.
Hello everyone! My name is Lorenz and I'm a proud Freshman here at NJCU. I haven't declared my major just yet but I'm almost sure that it'll be in Psychology. Helping others solve or identify their problems has always come natural to me. My friends and family have even called me their Lil' Dr. Phil a time or two.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of two children but I have a huge family. My love for them is indescribable and it's always a great time when we all get together. My latest addictions have been spending quality time with my boyfriend, tuning into my favorite reality tv shows and thrift store shopping. I get a thrill out of finding brand named items for a penny of their retailed price for some funny reason.
I'm from Camden New Jersey,a relatively small city known for it's staggering crime rate. Although it's looked down upon, I take pride in where I was born and raised because it made me who I am, and there are great people that reside there. Hope to get to know all you soon!
Hello! My name is Yannely and this is my first semester here within the NJCU community, and although I'm sad to see summer go so soon, autumn is my hair's favorite season. Born and raised in Jersey City, I'm not a very experienced traveler, but I do know my city well. One of my favorite pastimes is exploring the vastness of Liberty State Park. I'm passionate about books, television shows strictly featuring supernatural occurrences, too much music to list in one sitting, and bad jokes on tumblr.
ReplyDeleteI'm a psychology major, which I consider my calling. Understanding a very important key in life and that is what I'm best at, this strengthens my relationships and also helps me gain new friends. I'm very excited to forward my career understanding the human mind and though I've not decided what field to join, I know that it'll all come full circle eventually and I'll be doing something I love.
When I'm not in school or working, I'm home with my quirky family and our puppy Sophie, who loves missing her wee-wee pad almost always. Or I can be found hanging with friends attempting to try every flavor of Dairy Queen ice cream known to man, and making references lost on people because no one's ever seen that movie. This is great opportunity to discover new kinds of people and I'm very excited to be working with you all!

ReplyDeleteHey, my name is Tiheem and I was born and raised here in Jersey City, NJ. This is my first time being enrolled as a college student and I am glad to share the experience here at NJCU. My declared major is Media Arts. I chose this major because of my passion for music & technology. I am 18 years old soon to be 19 this month. Currently as of now I live with my mom and older brother, in a 2 family house not too far from the campus.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm not in school, I usually spend most of my time at a record store called "Iris Records." Collecting vinyl has recently been a hobby of mine, and I absolutely love it. The sound of vinyl makes you appreciate music more because you can't skip the song like you normally could with a cd or mp3 file. Also I'm a music producer and a disc jockey. I'm unemployed but I record vocals for local artist and design mixtape/album covers as a side job.
As far as me personally I would consider myself a pretty laid back person. I give great advice and I'm easy to talk to. Hopefully we can all work together and become friends inside and outside of the classroom. I'm looking forward to working with everyone.
Hello everyone, my name is Carte'A Mystique Sh'Vone Mercy Sharrock. It's a long name yet it's creation is a short story. Each of my aunts contributed a middle name and my mother's favorite niece provided my first. I personally like Mystique best, being that it defines my personality well. I'm not a shy individual as I may sometimes appear to be. I have several layers, the outermost being reserved which I am most of the time. Very few reach the core because I am so secretive due to trust issues that developed throughout my life.
ReplyDeleteI don't like revealing too much about myself so when given this assignment I was not at all thrilled. I contemplated giving the bare minimum but I thinking of the possible consequences to this action, as I normally do, I couldn't bring myself to do so. Despite my inability to open up, a lot of people have found comfort in sharing their problems with me. Most people don't care about your problems and a lot are glad you have them but me being the empathetic person I am feel the opposite. I have been told I am a good listener and good advice giver. I feel good knowing I helped someone through their hardships and I helped improve their life, even if just slightly.
I like chocolate chip cookies, strawberry milk, strawberry ice cream, sour patch candy, chocolate (no nuts), skittles, twizzlers, and so much more. I love trying new things and I work well under pressure or up late at night while the house is quiet and peaceful. My serenity is my room or in the park on a lovely spring day. I did gymnastics for 3 years, learned over 5 different dance styles like Tap & Ballet and earned awards for them over 10 years, Cheerleading 1 year, Karate 2 years, Beauty Pageants, to say the least, which have all brought some of my most blissful memories. My mother believed in involving me in a lot of activities to keep me out of trouble. I always was one to avoid trouble but associated with those who had a lot of it.
Being a Christian, helping others is apart of my duty. I perform this duty through community service as well. I volunteered with Jersey Care's on various projects around New Jersey. The most strenuous was Jersey City's Earth keepers project where we cleaned up the gardens in Liberty State Park. In addition, I'm also apart of Keyair's Angels, an organization that uplifts and empowers women. We believe it's unfair women are slaves to achieving society's definition of "beauty" to be accepted and internalizing this aggressor will only hurt more than it could help. Through encouragement and example we prove beauty comes in all colors, shapes, sizes, and everyone is beautiful. Physical features are only skin deep and what matters most is personality.
My decision to not astray from my true self and be the stereotypical young female is why I don't focus on my appearance or bother to stay up to date on the latest trends. I wear what I'm comfortable in because I am comfortable with and love who I am. I am my own person and I want to prove that by taking the road less traveled which is staying true to myself and my morals, I can be successful. Consequently, I've missed out on a traditional teenage girl experience of numerous dates. I was perfectly fine with being the misfit, it's what attracted my current boyfriend whose taught me the value of honesty, loyalty, and dignity. I was strictly about my books until he ignited my passion for dance I had as a child. Now I have a heathy balance of school and fun. I hope this class will combine the two and we'll all have a great experience. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me and sharing who you are as well, i look forward to learning and sharing more as time goes on.
Hi everyone, my name is Justin Garcia, I’m from Bayonne, New Jersey. I plan on majoring in business and having a minor in criminal justice. I chose to go to New Jersey City University because it was close to home. I want to major in business because I want to become very successful and I want to minor in criminal justice because I find homicides and white collar crime interesting, I also like the idea of figuring out the mystery of cases.
ReplyDeleteSome things that I enjoy doing are hanging out with my wonderful girlfriend, driving, learning about cars, and working out. Some things that I do not enjoy are ignorant people, the winter, conflict and chocolate. I have five younger siblings that I love very much and one older sibling. I am really good with kids, I can always make them smile when they’re having a bad day. Adjusting to college is a little tough being that you have to take a lot of the responsibility. It kind of sucks that many of my friends went to different colleges but that’s okay because that makes room to make some new friends.
My love for cars is very strong. I had a beautiful white V6 mustang and I loved it almost as much as my girlfriend, my sneakers and my PlayStation. I did everything you possibly could in it mechanically, I also went to work and went to a lot of far places in it. I put massive amounts of work into it, including repairs and grades with my own personal mechanic. I currently do not have it but I do plan on getting another mustang in the near future but a V8. That’s about it about it for myself, I hope I have a great semester in this class and I look forward to reading everyone else’s “about me”.
Hello!! My name is Gennesis Jaqueline Perla. I love my name even though my mother spelled it wrong. My name expresses the kind of person I am, even if its spelled wrong its so creative and I'm creative. I'm currently a freshman at New Jersey City University. I'm from Union City. I also graduated high school from Union City High School, home of the soaring eagles.
ReplyDeleteI plan to double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology. I plan to become a detective and solve as many crimes as I can. I chose these two majors because I love the criminal justice field and sociology is mostly about critical thinking. I also chose NJCU because it's a commuting university and I'm close to home.
Although I'm a bit quiet and at times restrained I plan to become more outgoing and more social. I can't wait to work with you all though out the semester!
