Take a few moments to watch the video below-- it will take about 12 minutes total. Then, answer the following questions regarding the federal campaign for fatherhood, as created by the Ad Council.
Be specific in answering the following:
- Who is the target audience for the ads?
- What messages are being communicated by the ads? In what way are they communicated?
- What rhetorical device are the ads using?-- be specific to each ad if they are using different devices.
- Was there anything that was surprising about the ads?
- Discuss the choice of spokespeople for the ads.
- Write your an appeal to fathers which focuses on the values the ads communicate using appeals to Ethos, Pathos and Logos. (This should be one full paragraph, minimum.)
1. The target audiences for the videos are fellow fathers of all types. Either ones who are spending enough time with their children and maybe ones who are not. I think it appeals to family men of all types.
ReplyDelete2. The messages being communicated in the ads are all positive ones. They are urging all fathers to spend time with their children and to take a time out to “be a father” because sometimes just making a child and supporting one doesn’t equal being a Dad.
3. All of the ads use multiple rhetorical devices, but the one apparent in all of them would be pathos. All of the advertisements are appealing to the emotions of the people watching. They want them to feel happiness and maybe even longing. They are seeing how much time these dads are spending with their children and maybe have feelings of longing as far as missing out on their children’s lives. Maybe it is bringing some awareness that they are letting time pass them by. It doesn’t necessarily have to appeal to just negligent fathers, but maybe fathers who are too busy working to provide for their families aren’t really spending the quality time they need to. Another rhetorical device used in the ads was ethos. The ads are showing that these men are all fathers and maybe similar to ‘us’ (the viewer, a father). We are more likely to take advice from people who seem trustworthy and similar to us than we are from someone who does not understand what we are going through.
4. I don’t think there was anything surprising about the ads. Maybe only the way that the other people in them were looking at the dads without realizing what they were really doing. I think that the ads painted a great picture of what our society is like today. The mailwomen in the first ad wouldn’t even suspect that the big wrestler was playing and dancing around with his daughter. It’s amazing what people see without really looking.
5. The spokespeople for these ads varies. However there are two that involve professional wrestlers, which some may see as cold and not very family oriented men because of their given professional stereotypes. It also shows that maybe if these very busy people who are sort of in the public eye have time to spend with their children than maybe I do, too. All of the ads feature working fathers who are taking time out to laugh and play with their children and I think that’s a great message to send. Everyone deserves to take some time out of their busy day to act like a kid again.
6. Everyone deserves to act like a kid, and what better way to do that than by spending time with your children? By taking the time out of your busy day, you’re showing them that they matter. You’re letting them know that they’re important. When you really listen to your kids, they’ll be more willing to open up to you in the future. Take the time to be dad because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. You won’t always be there for them, so while you are, be their teacher, friend, and mentor. Take time to be a father today.
1) The advertisements are targeting fathers or all households around America. Basically try to push the idea that fathers should spend more time with their children. No matter what situation or ordeal the family might be going through. Like in one of the videos where the father is perceived as a ex-convict it is stressed that he must be there for his daughter no matter what. His appearance even shocks the mail woman for she is surprised to see someone like him doing something so out of character just for his daughter. In some ways it might target single or separated spouses. For in not one advertisement was there a mother or even a strong female role.
ReplyDelete2) The messages of the advertisements is basically never too late to be in your child's life and that you should always be there for them. Maybe a missing father figure is a big problem in our society now. So they are trying to stress how important the father figure is in a child's life.
3) The rhetorical devices being used in these advertisements are ethos, pathos, and logos. Its appeal to logos is that a father is an important role to a child so that by spending time with your children it can improve your family life. When it comes to pathos they use emotions that are related to happiness and comfort. They also appeal to many peoples beliefs that a child needs a father figure to have a "happy" childhood. Finally for ethos the audience is addressed by all types of fathers for who better to tell you to be a father than an obvious father figure.
4) I was very surprised that there were no females in the advertisements at all. I know they main target is just fathers but I just don't get why they couldn't demonstrate a complete family. Even though situations aren't always perfect it would of be reassuring to see at least one female role in the advertisements. It just help shows that maybe the ad company is really trying to just push fathers who aren't really in the picture. Making them ultimately wanting to be in there kids life.
5) The ad campaign uses people whose appearance gives you a feel that they would at first be the complete opposite of a father but than in the end prove their fatherhood. For example in one ad the father is setting up for a boys night in and the assumption is that hes getting ready to play cards and be with older men. But in reality he sets up a great game of gold fish from him and his children.
6) Fathers! Now is the time to get into your child's life. A child needs their father in their lives no matter what the situation is. Even if you don't live with your kids and are not there every single second. Make sure you are there for them as much as you can be. They need you in their lives they appreciate every second you give so be kind and give your child some of your time.
1. The target audiences for these ads are to men with children. Also called fathers to not be too busy for your child. That ad wants fathers to be there for their children and help raise them. Without a father figure in a child’s life there is now way to determine how they will grow up.
ReplyDelete2. The messages being communicated are that you must make time for your child, do not neglect them. Also to find time in your busy schedule for your son and or daughter. The way the message is sent in each commercial is by pathos. Pathos is used in these commercials by showing happiness between children and their fathers.
3. Some rhetorical devices being used in these ads were pathos and argumentum ad populum. Pathos uses emotion to persuade the viewer or read to believe in its message. Which was to get fathers or father figures to always try to find to for your child. Also I noticed argumentum ad populum was used in the ads. This was done to make fatherhood seem like the popular and right thing to do. Argumentum ad populum is when popularity and fame is used to persuade.
4. I can only speak for myself on this subject and what I mean by that is that I am not easily surprised. One thing I can say is that I was somewhat caught off when I saw that some of the famous individuals in the ads were fathers. Other than that the commercials seemed like simple ads.
5. Two out of three of the ads seemed to showcase 2 famous fathers. These two are seen on television a lot and are famous in their own way. So the fact that they were used as examples of being a father was a great strategy because they are familiar to the viewer. When a face is familiar to a listener or viewer they are easier to listen to.
6. Being a father was never said to be easy or easily done. Especially when your hard working and busy but when your choose to be a father you must stay strong be committed. You must also remember being a father is a job in itself. Your reward is your child’s happiness and that’s the best reward any committed father could ever wish or ask for.
1. The target audience for the ads are dads and any father figure around the United States. Families in general is the target audience because fathers have a great impact in a household. Not only for raising children and being a good partner/husband but also creating stability.
ReplyDelete2. The messages being communicated by the ads is the importance of fathers and that fatherhood is an essential part of raising children. These ads communicate this message by showing bonding between the fathers and there children. They also use statistics to show the number of fathers who take the time to actually become better.
3. Rhetorical devices used in these ads varied but for the most they all used Pathos, which is the emotional appeal to viewers. For example in the first ad with wrestler Roman Reigns, he tugs at viewers heartstrings when he is seen singing to his daughter and then has a play tea party. It shows a genuine love and that makes the ad so interesting and ultimately persuading.
4. To be honest, I didn't find anything in these ads to be surprising. It's actually good to see unexpected celebrities and athletes appear in ads for good causes because it shows that they are down to earth. This is why pathos is incorporated in them to appeal to viewers emotions.
5. The choice of spokespeople seemed good to me, athletes are very influential especially to children. Wrestling is one the of most watched sporting events in the world so by having two superstar wrestlers promoting fatherhood it really gets the message across.
6. Fathers aren't only supposed to take out trash and read newspaper. They're supposed to help you face your fears and tell you to wipe your tears. They don't pick up you up when you fall but they give you confident to get up yourself. Fathers push you when you need to be pushed and that's why they're important and different from Mothers. Not to mention there's a difference between being a dad and a Father.
1. The slogan "Take time to be a dad today" used in the advertisement videos suggests that's target audience are all fathers. It's a tactic used to encourage them to try to connect with their children more, especially those who could and want to be better at parenting.
ReplyDelete2. The messages that are being communicated is the great importance the role of a father should play in their child's life. They do so by displaying moments like the father playing cards with his sons during their guys night, which a child may never forget and could potentially look back on when they're older as one of the happiest memories spent with their father.
3. a combination of all three rhetorical devices were used throughout the advertisement, however pass those used the most. The first add contain a professional wrestler which would install credibility and trust using the Ethos method. In addition, it brought out a loving & warm emotional with him playing with his daughter. Such emotion went along with the value of a parent and child relationship displayed. The ad with the fathers doing childish activity would be a logos rhetorical device with the opening being unclear to the audience as to why they would behave in such away. It wasn't until the conclusion of the advertisement that you learn they were doing it for the enjoyment of their children. Pathos was also used as it was in the others as well, having a heart warming and joyful emotion. The guys night out and the T-Pot was also set up that way. All were to intrigue the audience and keep their attention long enough to get their point across in a meaningful way.
4. I was surprised they pick a mean looking guy from the WWE to play a father I thought they were going for a theme more along "don't judge a book by its cover", "everything is not what it seems", and "you don't know what is going on from the outside looking in". I'm also surprised 86% of the men are more active in their children's lives then their father was in theirs.
5. The choice of the WWE superstar was genius. Many men, particularly older man, who are more likely to have children, would see the ad and considered maybe they are of the men that need to spend more time with their children. Besides the superstar, they also have men who look like real fathers in which the audience could relate to.
6. Men go to work that 9-to-5 job everyday just to "bring home the bacon" which provide what's believed the essentials of keeping your family together. You guys got it all wrong, the real job ends after you clock out and begins the minute you walk to the door. The reason you don't realize is because you would actually enjoyed this job. Spending time with your child will let them know "In my life, you are important" which will make them happy and build their self esteem. If you're involved in your child's life at an early stage you'll be able to have an open & close relationship where they'll be able to tell you everything. When trust is in place, the child will listen to your judgement and are more likely to follow guidance you provide. Unlike the rambunctious children on the playground, running around and giving their parents a hard time, yours will be obedient due to your positive influence on your child. In contrast, you could think it would be a waste of time and not as beneficial as your other job but in reality it's even more rewarding. Your self esteem will increase as well, with your child thinking you're the greatest person in the world.
1. The target audience of the ads is father's as suggested by the slogan "Take time to be a dad today". It's representing the idea that father's with a great presence in their child's life, is the best impact that they can provide. Basically saying, family is important a core value in America.
ReplyDelete2. The message being conveyed by the advertisement is that fathers should take time out of their days to spend with their children in order to have a good relationship with them. The examples being, real fathers who are portrayed by media as tough men who are usually violent, interacting with their children in a positive way. Basically saying that you don't only have to be a stay at home father in order to have a good time with your children.
3. The two rhetorical devices I believe are being used are ethos and pathos. The first focusing on the confidence in delivery, having tough men (who are usually assumed to be bad fathers) and their children speak for the general public. Pathos in the way of the slogan "Take time to be a dad today", saying that one should spend time with their loving kin and pushing the idea that doing this specific thing could make you better at being the dad that your kids deserve.
4. The only thing that is surprising is that someone's finally addressing the issue of male parents not being involved in their children's lives. In our society there's even a standing joke that some father's leave and never com back. It's never actually been said and women are mostly the one's complaining about it. It's a bit of a shock to see the issue being attacked in such a pleasant manner.
5. The men in the ads are men who are related to violence and that's how people perceive them. To show that even these big man who have power in their hands for violence enjoying tea parties and such, proves that any many can be a great father. That's the message they want to spread.
6. Father's are subject to suspicion because of their predecessors, but the good father's are the examples. The men who take time out to show you the real world and tell you the important things that are important for future survival. People take these good men for granted when they're doing something right, when something's wrong women often make themselves the victims. Men are supposed to be the strength of the family. Having a father who's influence is good is a great impact on a child's life, this shaping them to become good people to share the example with future generations.
1. The target audience for all of the ads are fathers. To be specific fathers that aren’t be the best kind of parent they can be, whether it be because of work or just lack of responsibility. The ad council wants fathers from all over to be more involved with their child’s life’s or even just even just get tips on being a better parent.
ReplyDelete2. The messages being communicated in the ads are to spent more time with your children, one ad represents this as singing a tea cup song and even pretending to be a tea cup for the child’s happiness and amusement. The message is communicated by the father simply spending time playing with his child.
3. The ads use all of the rhetorical devices, Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. All of the ads use both Ethos by projecting happiness and parents spending a good time with their child. The three videos use Pathos, the rhetorical device for emotion. The videos all show fathers enjoying the time with their children and it gives viewers a feeling of responsibility as well as a feeling of joy to see how happy the children can be just from playing with their fathers. The final ad uses all three, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. The last ad is a picture and while one cannot hear the joy and laughter going on when the picture was taken but one can see the happiness in the father and child’s faces which provides Ethos and Pathos but the ad also represents Logos by giving a picture and putting the phrase “take time to be a dad today” is very straight forward and crystal clear for all viewers.
4. I wasn’t really surprised by anything going on in the ads. I feel like it was an excellent business strategy to promote the ads by showing people who one may think do not have children or do not have the time to spend with their children but by showing people that these WWE wrestlers or any father who has to travel nonstop and be away from home can take a break spend time with their children then why can’t other fathers.
5. The choice of spokesmen for the ads was very different from what most people are used to for advertisements but the spokesmen were still able to bring the point across that your children should be your number one priority. The ads seemed as if the spokesmen do the things show casually, such as in the first ad. The wrestler playing tea cup with his daughter and the other wrestler playing go fish with his sons. The spokesmen seem so rehearsed as if they’ve done this before or even do this every other day.
6. Fathers should always be there for their children, no matter what the occasion. A first step, a birthday, a first date, a graduation, a driving test, or even a good morning, fathers should always be there for their kids. All the above mention need a father figure and no child wants to live without one. It is much better to be a hard working father who has little to no time with their kids who tries to do his best to be there and spend time with them then the father that isn’t there at all or doesn’t care to be the father figure they are expected to be.
1.Ad council is trying to target family and community, The ad slogan is “Take time to be a dad today” its meant for all dads to play a really important role in their children's life as a parent.
ReplyDelete2.One of The messages the ad is trying to communicate is for all father figures to spend more time with their children. In one of the videos the father is playing tea pot with his daughter, that represents that no matter how busy you are you should always try to communicate one way or another with your child.
3.The rhetorical device used in the ads are Pathos and Ethos. Pathos being emotional appealing to communicate to the audience. In the ad “Tea Pot” the father is showing how easily its should be to be able to play with their child, that was an emotional way to get to the audience. The slogan “Take time to be a dad today” is a pathos example that proves an emotional way the ad try to get to all the fathers. An example of Ethos would be the confident strategy they used to get to all the father figures. The confidence is proving their ad.
4.I didn't really find anything surprising about this ad. The ad has a good hook to get to the audience especially to all the (father’s). The ad had many celebrities from WWE, that was one of the best hooks to get to the audience because it demonstrates that any one can be dad and that every dad can spend time with their kids.
5.The chosen spokesperson for this ad was a perfect selection in my opinion. The WWE celebrities is one of the best strategies for an example of a father figure. They demonstrate how easily it should be to communicate with your children.
6.No one ever said that being a father was going to be easy. A father's responsibility is to look over their child and make them as happy as they can. Yes sure there are times when parents especially fathers are too busy but this ad has proven that it doesn't matter how busy you are you should always be able to spend as much time with your child.
